About Guitar Upscale
Guitar Upscale is a guitar you can play in your browser. It shows any scale on a full neck, plays every note you tap and strums the chords of the key.
Why it exists
Scales and chords make sense on paper, but they are hard to see on a real neck. Guitar Upscale started as a way to see where the notes of a scale sit, hear how they sound and try a riff without a guitar in your hands. It grew into a small music workshop for guitar players.
What you can do with it
- See scales on the neck. 85 scales, from the major scale and the pentatonics to Japanese, Gypsy and jazz scales, in any key and tuning.
- Play chords. The chords of the key sit next to the neck. Tap to strum once, or hold to strum a pattern.
- Tune your guitar. The tuner listens through the microphone and plays each string's note back to you.
- Record ideas. Record MIDI, layer loops, edit notes in a piano roll and download MIDI or Guitar Pro files.
- Play songs. Open Guitar Pro and MIDI files, or find songs on Songsterr and MIDI sites.
The fretboard, the scales and the major and minor chords are free. Recording, the looper, song upload and more chord types come with the paid plans.
Where it runs
Guitar Upscale runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. You can install it to your home screen, and it works offline once loaded. The same app is also packaged for Android.
Who makes it
Guitar Upscale is made by Oleg Chibikov, a software developer and guitar player. The lessons on this site are written by him and use the same scale and chord data as the app.
