About the Byzantine (Double Harmonic Major) scale

The notes are root, flat 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, flat 6th and 7th. It has two gaps of three half steps: from the flat 2nd to the 3rd and from the flat 6th to the 7th.

Both halves of the scale have the same shape, which gives it a balanced, exotic sound. It is also called the Arabic or Gypsy major scale.

Surf rock and film music use it for a desert sound. Play it over a major chord on the root.
