About the Aeolian + Phrygian scale
The notes are root, flat 2nd, 2nd, flat 3rd, 4th, 5th, flat 6th and flat 7th.
Most of the time the music sounds like natural minor. The flat 2nd comes in for a dark Phrygian turn, often as a major chord a half step above the root.
Film scores and heavy songs move between the two modes like this. Play natural minor and swap the 2nd for the flat 2nd where the chord asks for it.
